Sports Facility Operations: Why "If You Build It, They Will Come" Fails Owners
Field of Dreams is a great movie. It's terrible business strategy.
That's where Luke Wade and Mike Knowles, Facility Ally's Head of Growth, started on the latest episode of the Facility Playbook. You can have the best courts in the state. If nobody knows you exist, you built an expensive empty room.
Your Sports Facility Operations Don't Fail Because You Got Big Fast
Mike's take: growth isn't the problem. What's underneath it is.
Staffing, scheduling, budgets, marketing. When a facility starts adding programming faster than the team can execute it, something breaks. Not because the demand was bad, but because the plumbing wasn't in place before the growth hit.
Think about building a house. You need the foundation and the frame before you add the flooring and the furniture. Facilities work the same way. The systems have to be ready to expand at the same pace as the opportunity in front of you.
The Positioning Gap Nobody Talks About
A website can say "premium experience for active families." Then you walk the floor on a Tuesday night and the real customer is a 38-year-old guy there for the league and the community.
When that mismatch shows up, staff don't know who they're actually talking to. That adds pressure and stress that didn't need to exist. The fix isn't picking one audience and ignoring the rest. It's knowing who's actually showing up and building a brand you can come back to no matter who walks in.
Data Doesn't Lie
"Here's who we said we were" and "here's who actually showed up" are two different things, and most owners never measure the gap.
Same goes for household value. Every club has a family membership rate, but almost nobody tracks what a household is actually worth over time. Racquet sports has a pathway no other category has: pickleball for entry, padel for development, tennis for the long game. A family can move through all three over a decade, and most facilities are still counting them one member at a time.
Brand Will Always Beat Sales
Multi-sport facilities, AI adoption, local SEO, none of it replaces the fundamental thing: a facility that builds a real brand and a real community wins. One club or a network of fifty, the principle doesn't change.
